We all like a nice floral to put us in the Spring spirit, and this Spring/summer, the patterns are set to be loud and bold . But, can a Lesser Mortal wear them without looking like a right Charlie round your local Tesco? As always, the high street does some great variations, and if you are a shrinking violet (yes – a pun intended!) I suggest a more tonal pattern, perhaps in a pastel shade. But remember, it’s early days yet, and we always feel a bit brighter and bolder when the sun comes out.

coast floral dress phase eight 2 floral dress ted baker floral dress

  1. Riya dress. Coast. £90. Sizes 6-18. Polyester/elastane. dry clean. What you can’t see here, is the fabulous electric blue zip which runs the length of the back. It also has forgiving ruching over the belly area, so it isn’t body-con. Suits a curvier figure, as without hips, it is too flappy round the thighs. Also has forgiving 3/4 length sleeves.
  2. Lisette dress. Phase Eight £99. Sizes 6-20. Made of slinky jersey, this will flatter a larger bust because it has a V-neck, but it also gathers under the bust line, so it shows a slimmer midriff. With gathers and ruching around the waist, it also disguises a jelly-belly!! Machine washable. Less likely to crease for holidays and if you like matching accessories, this has shrugs, and bags to match.
  3. Cocoa – roses on canvas print dress. Ted Baker. £169. Size 6-14. 100% polyester and hand washable. Again, this prefers a curvy figure, as it has wider hip measurements. The fabric is not so stretchy, so the bust may be a little tight for some ladies.

These dresses are good investments, as the bold colours will be kind to pale English skin tones. And really…as a Lesser Mortal, did you suddenly think you were going to develop a mediterranean glow over the summer? If on a budget, you can always wait for the sales…..

wallis floral top zara floral jeans

  1. Navy blue floral top. Wallis. £33, now reduced to £31.35. Sizes 8-20. Running low on some sizes. Polyester and machine washable. A fab little top which hides a multitude of sins. Dress up or down. If you are buying a cheaper top, go for bold colours, as I always think paler polyester tops can look cheap.
  2. 5 pocket printed trousers in sky blue. Zara. £29.99. Cotton Elastane. Size 6-16. Machine washable. A comfy stretchy trouser in a more subtle floral. As the material on these are quite thin, you may want a longer length top or shirt with this. (unless you have rock hard abs, in which case you aren’t very mortal!!)

ted baker floral jacket river island floral jacket

  1. SAAMSA Electric daydream biker jacket. £179. Ted Baker. Polyester/elastane mix. Dry clean. Sizes 6-14. Don’t be put off by a bold jacket. For a start, you alway get compliments, as everyone else just has a dull plain one. But they are also much more stylish than a cardi!! Obviously, wear plainer T-shirts and jeans/trousers with it.
  2. Light pink daisy jacquard cropped jacket. £50. River Island. Size 6-18. Polyester and  metallic fibre. Dry Clean only. This is much more subtle if you are more wall flower than red hot poker! Again, ditch the cardi and look sharper with a throw-on jacket. This will also complement the pastel skirts coming through for the summer.

prada. metallic dress

Shiny metallics have graced the Autumn Winter catwalk and could really add some pizazz to outfits for We Lesser Mortals during the festive period…..or could it all go horribly wrong?

There is definitely room for error, and no matter how much we love Twiggy, I think you’ll agree – it hasn’t worked. And if you are plus size…well need I say more!! (MarksandSpencers Twiggy range)

twiggy

There have been the appearance of brogues and footwear in metallic silvers and bronzes, and although these will look great with skinnies, can you really imagine your teenagers face when you walk downstairs in them? Or for that matter, the other mums in the playground? (boots –Zara)

zara metallic shoes

There are much more wearable options which will suit Lesser Mortals from your thirties upwards. Flattering A-line dresses, metallic trousers which can be worn with either fitted tops, or more flowing blouses, to disguise wobbly bits!! Chanel style jackets which will glam up a Little Black Dresses at Christmas, or smarten up jeans and a jumper. And even chunky pieces of knitwear to keep you warm, without looking too fuddy duddy. If it’s all too much, metallic court shoes with a pair of skinnies, or a party dress, won’t look too young.  A little evening bag to update that sad old evening bag, you’ve had for years could give a nod in the direction of this trend!!

  1. Gold Sparkle Jacket Ted Baker £189. A mixture of fibres including wool, which is dry cleanable. Don’t restrict this to just night times – chuck it on over jeans during the day, or a tweed or leather skirt. it will complement navy, dark green and berry colours.
  2. Metallic Jumper Marks and Spencers Autograph Range £45. This is washable at 30 deg, and can be tumble dried!! Hip length for trousers and with the look “du jour” – chunky knit over leather skirt.

  2. Crystal brooch shoes Ted Baker £150. Dress up or down – with jeans or a traditional party dress. Or even peeking out from under a maxi dress?

d and G tweed 2013

D and G are showing some amazing classic tweed pieces, along with some of the other Fashion Houses. “Gorgeous and wearable” I hear you say…..at least Grace Kelly got away with it! But if you are approaching mid-life, have a figure more reminiscent of Olivia Colman than Victoria Beckham, and really struggle with heels, can you get away with it? Fear not Lesser Mortals, there are many items out there, more suited to our pockets, and that will fit all shapes and sizes. It is important to look at what shoes and accessories you wear with your tweed pieces, and I needn’t say that a Lesser Mortal in tweed, woolly tights and brogues doesn’t stand a chance……

3 tweeds 2013 1

  1. Tailored tweed coat. Karen Millen £275. This coat has woven matt metallic sleeves, and I think it escapes the Miss Marple look because of the sleeves, and because of its Crombie shape. It has lovely tucks at the back, which may allow room if you have wider hips. It is made of Alpaca wool, cotton and mohair. Will look great with flat shoes too.
  2. Bronze textured jacket – Next £45. In an up to date Chanel style, you can chuck this jacket on over a pair of jeans, skinnies and brogues or Chelsea boots, and definitely not look like you are stalking deer. It is a polyester wool mix.
  3. Bronze textured skirt – Next £30. this A line shape flatters curvier shapes and can be worn with a simple jumper and heels or knee length boots. You can pair with the jacket above, and go for a real Jackie O look, for £75!!

3 tweeds 2013 2

  1. Here is another Karen Millen style: Herringbone tweed jersey dress £190. I think Karen Millen have done this tweed look well, because they have given it an urban edge. Hobbs can be a bit country gent and so can Joules. The shape is great for hour glass and pear shapes. It could also work on boyish figures. Fabric is faux leather, wool cotton and elastane.
  2. Tweed waistcoat Ted Baker.£129. Here’s a quirky tweed waistcoat from Ted Baker which isn’t just for work situations. How about teaming with a leather pencil skirt, or berry waxed jeans and a silk shirt? Maybe wear a leather jacket over, rather than a tweed one, to look less country set.
  3. Checked blazer with elbow patches. Zara £69.99. These types of jacket are so versatile, that you can wear in formal and informal situations. I would sling it over some jeans at the weekend, or wear with a skirt or dress during the week. Tall women may struggle with the arm length, but Long Tall Sally do one without the elbow patches.

aw13 mannish maison Martin margiela

Mannish shapes and pinstripes were shown as a trend for Autumn 2013, but can a Lesser Mortal who is a mother of kids, slightly weightier than in their heyday, get away with it? You’ll notice how all the magazines show these styles on gorgeous, slim models with long hair, to counteract the mannish-ness of the pieces!!! Obviously there is a reason for this! They are quite difficult to wear! The look can translate well into work wear, but it can also work casually.

pinstripe working

  1. Belted pinstripe dress Mango £59.99. Hand washable. This shape is feminine and works well for women who like to show off a waist, but who may also have no curves ( the skirt will give curves). And it also works if you have wider hips, as the A line shape to the skirt will disguise them nicely.
  2. Navy pinstripe jacket Zara £49.99. Poly viscose and dry clean. This lovely little jacket can be slung on over jeans or any coloured skirt/dress to give it a bit of a lift. It is really easy to wear.
  3. Ambrose pin stripe jacket £225 and Lynne pin stripe trousers £135. Reiss. Dry clean. Reiss have really nailed this trend making it look relaxed and not too mannish, so most women could wear this in a networking/work situation. I would definitely wear heels and a bright top underneath.

Here are 2 looks I think would definitely be hard for a Lesser Mortal to pull off:

top shop mans coatzara man strip skirt £29.99

  1. Navy wool coat Top shop Boutique £210
  2. Pinstripe skirt and top Zara. The skirt is £29.99 and is a really easy piece to wear with opaque tights, knee boots and a bright knitted jumper. As you can see from the photo, too much pinstripe in hard for a Lesser Mortal to carry off, hence the gorgeous model who looks old enough to be my daughter!!

tartan catwalk

Here are some of the tartan “looks” from the Moschino catwalk for Autumn Winter 2013 and some of the trousers in the stores at the moment, the ones shown are Karen Millen. As a Lesser Mortal, frankly I’d get laughed out of the playground, if I turned up at school in any of these outfits. As well as the fact, I don’t live in the Big Smoke, I’m not in my twenties and am not as toned as I used to be. It’s actually quite hard to find tartan in this provincial city I call home, so whether we see more in the shops coming up to Christmas, we’ll see. Here are some lovely ideas, which are much more wearable, and in the stores at the moment.

tartan image 1

1) Crawford skirt from Joules £ 49.95. It’s machine washable and is a cotton viscose mix. This style flatters most body shapes, and is a respectable length for We Lesser Mortals. Just make sure it’s not too long, or you’ll look like your granny.

2) Michelle tartan dress from Phase Eight £110. This is great for work or day time, and is made of a stretch wool mix fabric. It’s dry clean only.

3)Checked top with frilled sleeve Zara £25.99. 100% polyester and washable. This lovely little top, could be styled up with jeans or skirts for casual wear or for a night out. Very versatile.

6) Check chiffon mid length kilt, Top Shop £48. 100% polyester and machine washable. This embraces the trend for more mid length skirts. I would suggest a heel with it for We Lesser Mortals, or you might look like Miss Jean Brodie.

carve oversized coat

Oversized and manly cut coats and jackets are a fashion statement this autumn, but if you are not shaped like a stick, and still in full time education, can you get away with them?

I’m afraid that unless you are relatively slim, the answer is no.

But fear not as there are loads of lovely alternatives out there, embracing the current colour trend for “pinks”. Watch out for the cheaper shaggy versions, which I think will pill, and make you look like you are wearing the dogs rug. Here are some I think will be good investments:

coast pink coat Jaegar boutique coat boden pink coat zara coat

From left to right, and top to bottom:

Coast £250 – this coat feels very Audrey Hepbourne

Jaegar Boutique £195 – this coat is beautiful, but quite sharp in colour

Boden £143 – a great classic, and already reduced to this affordable price

Zara £179 – maybe not great if you are standing round football pitches or being daubed with jammy fingers, but a subtle pale pink colour, which embraces the autumn winter pastel colour trend
