Can We Lesser Mortals wear jumpsuits without looking like Andy Pandy or an 80’s throw back?

Lesser Mortals are probably thinking – Can I wear a jumpsuit at my age or is it too young? Is it practical if dragging a toddlers around? or even: With my pelvic floor, can I get to the loo quick enough? Jumpsuits have been around for the last 2-3 years, and I think they are highly wearable and comfy if you are a jegging type lady, and hate constrictive garments. I also think they are very stylish, as not many people have embraced them yet. I wear mine for special occasions, like weddings, as I like to be different, and you can guarantee everyone else will be in a dress. ( I shall be posting some images on my Facebook page if you want a laugh – Vicky Smith Styling) Anyway, here are some ideas for different shapes, sizes and budgets, as obviously with a jumpsuit, you haven’t got the flexibility to buy different size tops and bottoms (not least tall ladies don’t want to be cut in half, and petite ladies don’t want to trip over their trousers legs!!) I also prefer the jumpsuits that are the same pattern top and bottom, (for different patterns top and bottom, you could just buy separates). A belt is an essential accessory which can add quality to a cheaper jumpsuit.

  1.  Brittany jumpsuit. Phase Eight. £110. Sizes 8-18. Polyester elastane. Machine washable. Fastens with a zip at the back. This will suit pear shapes, as the drapey wide legs flow nicely from the hip. Hourglass figures and larger busted ladies may find this fits them, as the V neck and stretch fabric will allow room to expand and the V-neck will break up that area. (NB – Next stocks this jumpsuit too!) Lovely with a Chanel style jacket.
  2. Saskia Lace jumpsuit. Phase Eight. £110. Sizes 8-18. Mixture of fibres. Dry clean only. Again, the wide leg flatters larger hips, the 3/4 sleeves are for those who hate their upper arms, and the wrap over top suits a nice bust. The gentle gathering over the tummy area, may also forgive a less toned middle area, but if store fat over your tummy, the gathers may accentuate too much. Will suit hourglass figures too.
  3. Pink jumpsuit. Next. £55. 100% polyester. sizes 6-22 reg, and 6-18 petite and 8-18 tall. How lovely to see a jumpsuit that isn’t black !!(believe me, there are a lot of black ones out there!!) This has the advantage of being scaled to fit whatever height you are. If you are petite, wear heels and make sure the legs drape over your shoes, to give the illusion of extra height.  Definitely wear with a belt.

  1. Navy print jumpsuit. £28. Next. 100% viscose. Available in sizes 8-22 and petite and tall. This is a good jumpsuit or wearing with flat shoes as well as heels. It will suit top heavy ladies with long slim legs. The slightly dropped waist will lengthen your torso and again, use a belt.
  2. Printed wide leg jumpsuit. £35. Next.  Only available in regular sizes 6-22. Don’t be a shrinking violet. This eye catching jumpsuit allows you to cover up on the beach, or dress up a night time with heels. You probably need a generous chest to suit this, but it will also expand round the waist, and apple shapes may find a contrasting belt around the middle gives a waist where there isn’t one. Use a coloured pashmina at night time.
  3. Palm print jumpsuit. £39.99. Mango. Xs- XL. 100% viscose. Handwash. Another lovely summery print. Suits a boyish shape, as the straps don’t allow much bra support. Wear with a smart belt. To dress up, use a gold belt and high heels.  For evening, a white tuxedo jacket will really add style.

Have fun shopping!! Don’t forget to see how I wear mine on my Facebook page. Vicky Smith Stying.

We all like a nice floral to put us in the Spring spirit, and this Spring/summer, the patterns are set to be loud and bold . But, can a Lesser Mortal wear them without looking like a right Charlie round your local Tesco? As always, the high street does some great variations, and if you are a shrinking violet (yes – a pun intended!) I suggest a more tonal pattern, perhaps in a pastel shade. But remember, it’s early days yet, and we always feel a bit brighter and bolder when the sun comes out.

  1. Riya dress. Coast. £90. Sizes 6-18. Polyester/elastane. dry clean. What you can’t see here, is the fabulous electric blue zip which runs the length of the back. It also has forgiving ruching over the belly area, so it isn’t body-con. Suits a curvier figure, as without hips, it is too flappy round the thighs. Also has forgiving 3/4 length sleeves.
  2. Lisette dress. Phase Eight £99. Sizes 6-20. Made of slinky jersey, this will flatter a larger bust because it has a V-neck, but it also gathers under the bust line, so it shows a slimmer midriff. With gathers and ruching around the waist, it also disguises a jelly-belly!! Machine washable. Less likely to crease for holidays and if you like matching accessories, this has shrugs, and bags to match.
  3. Cocoa – roses on canvas print dress. Ted Baker. £169. Size 6-14. 100% polyester and hand washable. Again, this prefers a curvy figure, as it has wider hip measurements. The fabric is not so stretchy, so the bust may be a little tight for some ladies.

These dresses are good investments, as the bold colours will be kind to pale English skin tones. And really…as a Lesser Mortal, did you suddenly think you were going to develop a mediterranean glow over the summer? If on a budget, you can always wait for the sales…..

  1. Navy blue floral top. Wallis. £33, now reduced to £31.35. Sizes 8-20. Running low on some sizes. Polyester and machine washable. A fab little top which hides a multitude of sins. Dress up or down. If you are buying a cheaper top, go for bold colours, as I always think paler polyester tops can look cheap.
  2. 5 pocket printed trousers in sky blue. Zara. £29.99. Cotton Elastane. Size 6-16. Machine washable. A comfy stretchy trouser in a more subtle floral. As the material on these are quite thin, you may want a longer length top or shirt with this. (unless you have rock hard abs, in which case you aren’t very mortal!!)

  1. SAAMSA Electric daydream biker jacket. £179. Ted Baker. Polyester/elastane mix. Dry clean. Sizes 6-14. Don’t be put off by a bold jacket. For a start, you alway get compliments, as everyone else just has a dull plain one. But they are also much more stylish than a cardi!! Obviously, wear plainer T-shirts and jeans/trousers with it.
  2. Light pink daisy jacquard cropped jacket. £50. River Island. Size 6-18. Polyester and  metallic fibre. Dry Clean only. This is much more subtle if you are more wall flower than red hot poker! Again, ditch the cardi and look sharper with a throw-on jacket. This will also complement the pastel skirts coming through for the summer.

tartan catwalk

Here are some of the tartan “looks” from the Moschino catwalk for Autumn Winter 2013 and some of the trousers in the stores at the moment, the ones shown are Karen Millen. As a Lesser Mortal, frankly I’d get laughed out of the playground, if I turned up at school in any of these outfits. As well as the fact, I don’t live in the Big Smoke, I’m not in my twenties and am not as toned as I used to be. It’s actually quite hard to find tartan in this provincial city I call home, so whether we see more in the shops coming up to Christmas, we’ll see. Here are some lovely ideas, which are much more wearable, and in the stores at the moment.

tartan image 1

1) Crawford skirt from Joules £ 49.95. It’s machine washable and is a cotton viscose mix. This style flatters most body shapes, and is a respectable length for We Lesser Mortals. Just make sure it’s not too long, or you’ll look like your granny.

2) Michelle tartan dress from Phase Eight £110. This is great for work or day time, and is made of a stretch wool mix fabric. It’s dry clean only.

3)Checked top with frilled sleeve Zara £25.99. 100% polyester and washable. This lovely little top, could be styled up with jeans or skirts for casual wear or for a night out. Very versatile.

6) Check chiffon mid length kilt, Top Shop £48. 100% polyester and machine washable. This embraces the trend for more mid length skirts. I would suggest a heel with it for We Lesser Mortals, or you might look like Miss Jean Brodie.
