Can We Lesser Mortals wear a pencil skirt no matter what shape, age and size we are?

Pencil skirts are a big fashion statement for Spring Summer 2014. Older women (i.e. over 30!) are often stuck for fashion advice, worrying about whether they look like mutton dressed as lamb. Of course it is possible to be a stylish older woman (and I don’t mean you’ve got one foot in the grave) and pencil skirts are a current fashion trend as well as being a shape which has seen the test of time – think 40’s war images, 50’s screen sirens etc. Don’t worry what shape you are – pencil skirts flatter hourglass figures, boyish shapes, curvy ladies, pear shapes and top heavy women. I would only be wary if there is a huge difference in size between your top half and bottom half, of 2-3 sizes. e.g you buy a size 10 top and a size 16 bottom. Also be VERY careful with knitted jersey skirts (T-shirt fabric), as they will show every lump and bump, and also make pear shaped ladies even more pear shaped. Go for a good thick woven material. Here are some of my favourites.

karen millen pencil boyish skirt next pencil skirt pear shape

  1. Stretch Cotton pencil skirt. £99. Karen Millen. Cotton elastane. Dry clean. Sizes 6-16. Suits a boyish figure, as the peplum creates curves. See how the high waist shortens your torso though. Also hourglass figures suit this, as again the peplum accentuates your curves. Add a belt to remind people of your tiny waist.
  2. Stone Skirt. £35. Next. 100% tencel. sizes 6-22R. Suits a pear shape, as the contrast line in the middle draws attention towards the centre. Also, it needs to be worn with a coloured top, which draws attention upwards.

boden pencil skirt for top heavy boden flower oragnza skirt

I love these 2!!! How summery????

  1. Modern Pencil skirt. £59. Boden. Available in stripes, florals and denim. In regular, petite and tall lengths. Sizes 6-20. Cotton elastane mix, and machine washable. If this is pricey for you, there are ALWAYS offers on Boden. Suits a top heavy lady, as the pattern draws attention downwards, and the slightly lower waist, elongates a short body.
  2. Flower organza skirt. £99. Boden. Available sizes 6-22 and reg, petite and tall lengths. Cotton polyamide mix. Hand washable. also in bubblegum and navy colours. With a matching top, you get 3 looks if you buy the top too. Suits most shapes, but petites will gain the benefit of appearing to lengthen their body and looking taller.

reiss pencil skirt for tall women

  1. Bryant Straight midi skirt in gem. Reiss. £120. Viscose elastane. Dry clean only. sizes 6-16. This is a very modern length – midi, which would be quite daring on regular heights, ridiculous on petites and fantastic on tall  ladies!!

Can We Lesser Mortals wear denim with out looking like a yummy mummy?

Denim is all over the shops at the moment, and we must all have had those moments in our youth when we wore denim all the time. Can you even remember running around after your kids all day, thinking you’ll never stop wearing jeans and finally consigning them to weekends only? Are you worried that denim will make you regress back to thinking only about cleaning and the shopping list? Well, the modern twist on denim has a really smart and urban feel, so we should definitely buy a piece this summer, but unless you want to look like a yummy mummy, avoid a denim jacket and a faded denim skirt cut just above your knee (what do you mean, you still have one from 10 years ago??)

next denim biker jkt karen millen denim skirt next denim dress

  1. Midwash denim biker jacket. Next.  £45. Size 6 – 22. 100% cotton. One reviewer says the sleeves are long and if you are well endowed, it is tight when done up. However, this is a really modern twist on a denim jacket, and copies the winter trend for leather biker jackets. It will look fab with floral or pastel coloured jeans this summer.
  2. Dark denim pencil skirt. Karen Millen. £99. Cotton elastane mix. Sizes 6-16. What I love about this skirt, is, it is an on trend pencil shape, cut longer in the length, and when styled like this -with ankle boots – is as far away from yummy mummy as possible. Definitely style with heels – sandals or boots – to give it a modern feel. If it’s too pricey – Next do one too, but it is paler in wash.
  3. Denim shirt dress. Next. £30. 100% cotton. Comes in regular, tall and petite, as well as sizes 6-22. It has loads of 5 star reviews, but won’t be easily recognisable as Next, when you wear it. It’s very forgiving in style if you have any lumps and bumps to hide. The tie belt, will adapt to high or low waists, and the button up style flatters large chests.

  1.  Denim Liz pleated shirt. G Star Raw. £130. sizes XS- XL. Polyester cotton, chambray fabric. Even with these pleats, this is washable! I think this is a really unusual shirt, and will work really well with the summer pencil style skirts and skinny jeans, and even white tuxedo style trousers.
  2. Tie front shirt. Levis. £65. 100 % cotton. Only size XS- L. Machine washable. This shirt is longer length for those self conscious about their bellies, and the pussy bow gives it a really smart grown-up look. It’ll look great with jeans, skirts and leather pencil skirts. It may even be smart enough for office wear.

  1. Tencel tapered trousers. Next. £32. Sizes 6-22 and length Reg to Long and X-long. 100% man made Tencel.  At last, some soft loose fitting trousers for summer. Wear with a shell or vest top and definitely heels, or they’ll look like jog pants. Layer with a bomber jacket or blazer to keep the look smart.
  2. Denim ballerina flats. Zara. £29.99. Sizes 3-8. Upper is 100% cotton. With a see-through perspex heel, how wearable are these little flats? Fabulous to wear with everything, and perfect for holidays when your feet swell with the heat!!

I think you’ll agree there are many new fresh ideas for denim this summer, without being too casual. If you have any comments or questions, feel free to ask.

michael kors camouflage

Camouflage has made an appearance on the catwalks for Autumn Winter 2013, and River Island commissioned Rihanna to design a range for them. Perhaps this should be a warning to We Lesser Mortals…..since most of us are fully aware that we will a) never look like Rihanna b) Don’t want to either, as we said good bye to our 20’s some time ago and our bottoms have long since passed the stage of twerking!! Maybe it should be a warning, as I notice River Island has reduced the range! Anyway, there are some nice subtle pieces out in the stores, which I feel a Lesser Mortal can we can wear with pride and without fear of being laughed at!!!

dress camo copy

  1. Leopard print dress. Karen Millen £160 Manmade fibres with elastane. Dry Clean only. Nice for an hour glass figure and fab for going out in the evening or wearing knee length boots.
  2. Print blazer. Next item 894385 £60 man made. Goes up to large sizes. This jacket will be great either in an office environment, over shiny jeans for going out in, or even an LBD!!! Very versatile and a great price.
  3. Sequin dress Next item 873406 £65. This is a polyester elastane fabric mix. It is available in petite(5’3′) and tall (5’10) as well as regular sizes. It will not fit very well if you are very hippy, but apart from that, will look fab over opaque tights, which of course, We Lesser Mortals love……

.camo bottoms 2013

  1. Camouflage jeans Karen Millen £85. Machine Washable. Since most of We Lesser Mortals have embraced skinnies, either with a long top to disguise hips, or with shorter tops and jumpers, these jeans are very wearable. I suggest you always wear a heel, or you may look like GI Jane (or at least never wear flat lace up boots)
  2. Camo jacquard pencil skirt Topshop £38. Polyester cotton and machine washable. As I have mentioned before, pencil skirts are very wearable, whatever your shape is. I think this will look great with opaques, knee length boots and a chunky jumper, or fine gauge kit and a blazer.
  3. MOTO cam print tencel joggers. Topshop.£45 100% Lyocell. For those Lesser Mortals who don’t like clingy trousers, these are ideal for a looser fitting trousers, in a nice floppy fabric. They will be very comfortable, and should be teamed with a brogue, pump or heel. As they are drawstring, a slightly longer top may look better for muffin tops!! I also like the fact they are blue.

All in all, there wasn’t huge amount of camouflage in the shops, so it’s not a massive trend, but may appeal to those Lesser Mortals who don’t like to look too girly.
