How can We Lesser Mortals wear our summer outfits in winter, to get our moneys worth?

For Lesser Mortals, with modest incomes and little time on our hands, it’s a luxury these days, to have outfits which you can only wear in one season. We all have a few items which are for “hot holidays only”. Yes, your butt skimming hot pants and floaty Lady Di translucent skirts can’t really be worn in autumn, so need vacuum packing away till the next time you board your Monarch flight to Faro!! But some of the trends bought earlier in the year, can be worn into autumn, allowing us get more “wears” for our money. Here are some ideas.

Animal Prints:

In summer, floaty animal print dresses were worn with bare legs and ballerinas or sandals (yes, I know she has black ankle socks, but she is only 19). In winter, these dresses can be styled with opaque tights and knee boots, or  stilettos. A leather jacket or blazer, can add an extra layer.

  1. Leopard print dress. £44.99 Mango. 100% polyester. Machine washable. Sizes 6-14.
  2. Animal print dress. £38. Next. Polyester/viscose/elastane mix. Sizes 8-18, reg, petite, and tall.

Floral dresses

Lots of Lesser Mortals, may think that florals are just a summer print, to be worn at weddings or on sunny days, with sandals. You can see here, how they translate well with leather jackets and ankle (or knee) boots in winter. Obviously, bare legs is a fairly “young” look. You probably need opaques.

  1.  Opulent bloom print dress. £159. Ted Baker. 95% polyester 5% elastane. Sizes 6-16.
  2. Dark floral print dress. £145. Karen Millen. 967 % cotton 3% elastane. Size 6-16

Jumpsuits

ss14 to aw14 jumpsuit top shop 2ss14 to aw14 jumpsuit KM

You may think jumpsuits are for the younger Lesser Mortals, but the Daily Mail did do a feature on older women wearing jumpsuits, who found them very stylish and comfortable. I also did  a feature on Facebook – and I’m no spring chicken. Vicky Smith Styling on 10th April. In summer, they were probably worn with sandals or flat converses, but in winter, sparkly party shoes, or ankle boots, can make them appropriate for winter parties, or for daytime.

  1. Strappy silk jumpsuit. £80. Top shop by Boutique. 100% silk. (yes 100% silk – most silk shirts are over £100 in some stores). Sizes 6-16. Team with an expensive looking belt.
  2. Fluid soft jumpsuit. £225. karen Millen. 29% polyester 71% acetate. Dry clean only. Sizes 6-16.

Hopefully this has given you some ideas of how to get more wear from your clothes.

Can We Lesser Mortals really wear white and not look…….inappropriate?

White is always in…. out……shake it all about, but Lesser Mortals have lots of dilemmas – Will my pants show through?(you’d be surprised…) Will I get ketchup on the them? Am I too pale to wear white? Who am I kidding that I am pure and innocent….? This year, it is fashionable to wear white and white and white-altogether.

As I always say, the fashionistas in London can get away with a lot, but you try trotting round Asda with white stilettos, white handbag and a white dress, and we all know who will have the last laugh. My advice would be to take hints of the trend – maybe add the white shoes/sandals at night time to get the whole look. (And yes, I know white shoes used to be tarty, but they are very on trend this year. They are very retro -think 60’s. Maybe a kitten heel rather than stiletto? And white sandals do go with everything). White jeans are easy to get hold of, so I haven’t looked at those. And be careful with white linen trousers – they can look like a dogs dinner. (and you do tend to see a lot of older ladies in them…….) Add a bright or dark cardi which you can stick on and button up when you are eating – it will save a lot of soaking when you get home……

Did I mention my other pet hate is cheap white polyester nylon. Just don’t do it. It needs to look luxurious and silk like.

  1. Amarro top – All Saints. £98. Sizes 4-14. 100% polyester. Dry clean only. A bit pricey, but may be on sale soon. The back is lower than the front. Suits apple shapes and anyone who wants to hide anything. The model is 5’11 so it will be VERY long on smaller ladies. Team with white skinnies for the full on “look”.
  2. Cream woven cami. Next £12. sizes 6-18. Bigger sizes sold out on line. A variety of comments on this being see through or static, but I thought it looked quite good for £12. Maybe it is just ok for under jackets. Suits anyone really-unless you have problem with your bra straps showing – lots of larger busted ladies wear co-ordinating coloured bras under strappy tops, or ones with see through straps.
  3. Ivory high neck top. J by Jasper Conran at Debenhams. £32. Sizes 8-20. Features a zip fastening at the back. A lovely silky feeling top for not a bad price. Best on boyish figures and pear shapes – depending on what they team it with.

  1. Linen blend blazer Marks and Spencers.. £75 reduced to £50. sizes 8-22 regular length only. A lovely jacket at an affordable price. Chuck it on instead of a cardi. Suits most body shapes – apart from apple. To rock the “look”- wear with white skinnies, and heels.
  2. White broderie dress. J by jasper Conran at Debenhams. I was really surprised how nice this was. 100% cotton and machine washable. Has a side zip. This would suit hourglass, boyish and pear shapes. The length appeals to trendy younger ladies or more demure older ladies!! Go 50’s with coloured flat pumps, or rock it up with a black leather jacket.
  3. Jennifer white lace fit and flare. Reiss. £155. 100% cotton. Dry clean only. sizes 4-16. Would suit pear shapes and boyish, and perfect if you dislike your upper arms, or going to an event that require decorum. Model is 5’11 so will be longer on normal heights.

Can We Lesser Mortals wear tropical florals without seeing flash backs of Hawaii Five O and Fantasy Island!!

The trouble with all these retro fashions, is, a lot of us, have worn them first time round….which is quite off putting, and you don’t want people to mistakenly think you are off to a fancy dress party! Of course, times change and fashions become more subtle (although you try telling that to the rather large lady I saw the other day in fluorescent hot pants!) So yes, whether you are 30, 40, 50 or 60, then I think there is something for everyone. If you are a more cautious lady, then choose a more subtle print, or maybe accessories, and team it with plainer items. If you wear the whole lot together, then don’t blame me if you find parrots nesting in your bee hive…..

Great for holidays, as lovely and cool, and won’t crease like linen, in your suitcase. Wear with a plain bomber jacket and heels.
  2. Kin print racer vest top. £69. Reiss. Size XS -L . Lyocell jersey fabric.  Can be dressed up or down with jeans, or white smart trousers, and plain skirts. Suits boyish figures best.

Can We Lesser Mortals wear the paintbox trend without looking like we’ve been decorating?

Picture it now….you cruise into work/playground/supermarket in your newest high fashion purchase and are mortified when some bright spark shouts “Oi love – you’ve spilt some paint on your dress”. Yes, we slaves to fashion have had some seriously embarrassing moments in the past when we have taken a fashion trend too literally. And whilst I’m all up for a bit of creativity, the designers haven’t really considered how much a Lesser Mortal can put themselves through! So should you bin this trend straight away and save your street cred? or persevere in an attempt to look hi-brow and interesting? So Lesser Mortals with big bums, wrinkly skin, fat legs, etc here are some suggestions which are more wearable, but take heed…there are probably easier trends to embrace.

pain box zara - no paint box zara no

I would probably leave these ones the teenagers…….(both above from Zara)

More wearable if you are an older woman, working woman, busy mother & have less than perfect bodies…..

  1. Sierra vintage floral jumpsuit. Reiss. £245. Sizes 4-14. 100% silk. Now if I was going to a wedding this summer, this is what I would wear, because I always like to be different from everyone else. If you are brave enough, it is really eye-catching. Will suit a slight pear or boyish shape.
  2. Photographic print skinny jean. Karen Millen. £90. sizes 6-16. Polyester, elastic and cotton mix. Cool machine wash. Good old skinny jeans to alleviate the boredom of blue wash jeans. Karen Millen jeans tend to be slightly higher waisted and better for boyish or less curvy figures.

  1. Wrap dress – Next. £32. Viscose elastane. Sizes 6-26 in reg, petite, and tall sizes. Lots of regular seem to be sold out ‘on line’, despite being new in! Everyone loves a wrap dress, although I’m fed up of them. This print makes the style new and fresh and will suit most body shapes.
  2. Paint brush silk top. Jigsaw. £98. Sizes 8-14. 100% silk. Handwash. I love this effortless silk top, as the bold colour will lift english complexions, and can be worn with white or indigo jeans, and even some of summer pastel shades. You can also team with the matching skirt (see below) to get a dress.  Suit boyish, tall or pear shapes.
  3. Paint brush silk skirt. Jigsaw £129. 100 % silk. Lined. If worn as a dress with the top, it will suit boyish shapes better. Some hourglass may get away with it, but the top isn’t great for larger busts. On it’s own, or with a plain top, this will suit top heavy ladies. No wash instructions on this. You will get your moneys worth with this skirt as all the magazines are full of the NEW midi length, so this is the start of a trend.

painbox zara yes paint box top zara

  1. Printed dress. Zara. £29.99. Polyester elastane. Sizes S-L. Machine washable. A simple easy shapeless dress, to wear over leggings or slung on in the evening if you are somewhere hot on holiday (as worn by model, with Birkenstocks). Quite quirky as the back is a different shade to the front. Older ladies may not like the unfinished sleeves. I would probably wear with navy leggings. Better on a boyish shape.
  2. Printed top. Zara. £25.99. 100% polyester. Sizes XS-XL. This is longer at the back than the front, so if you hate your bum…! I would suggest a vest top underneath, but this is a lovely floaty summer top, which probably suits most shapes, depending on what you wear it with.

These are all at the top end of the price range, but the cheaper versions looked more home made as if you’d made them when you were at primary school! Also, a lot were quite shapeless which suggests to me they are hard to wear, so, they stick them on skinny young models, who could make a bag look sexy!

Can We Lesser Mortals wear organza and only show our modesty?

Organza can be tricky for older women, or those of us with less than perfect figures And it can be downright impractical whilst juggling kids, shopping bags and supermarket trolleys. Do you trust your friends or sales consultants to give you the right fashion advice for your age? (or are they secretly having a laugh behind you back!) Will a sales person give the right fashion advice if they are half your age? Well, I absolutely think you can follow fashion whatever your age, and shape. It’s just the degree to which we do this, that’s the tricky bit!! Here are some affordable High Street ideas, which I think will suit Lesser Mortals.

see through Zara jacket see through Zara white blouse

  1. Organza jacket. Zara. £25.99. polyester cotton mix. In navy blue. Machine washable. Sizes S, M, L. What a great jacket for slinging on over jeans, or over a delicate strappy dress or top at night time. Pretty well suits any body shape, depending on what you are wearing it with. PEAR shapes with wide leg trousers or A line skirts, HOURGLASS with some thing that draws attention to your waist, BUSTY ladies leave open, BOYISH shapes with anything, or highlight your waist with a belt, and APPLE shapes need to lengthen their bodies with heels and long flowing trousers, or an empire one dress.
  2. Striped poplin organza blouse. £29.99. Zara. 100% cotton and polyester stripes. Machine washable. available in XS, S, M L. The back has a small split up the lower back. This shell top looks daunting at first, but for those faint of heart, a little vest top should help cover your modesty. Obviously, avoid if your bra/vest top causes any flesh to squidge out over it! The stripes conveniently cover your bra, and it’s not too cropped. As it is a boxy shape, it will make your chest area look bigger, so will flatter PEAR shape but make busty ladies too top heavy.

see through Jigsaw dresssee through karen millen dress

  1. Watercolour organza dress. £198. Jigsaw.100% silk. Dry clean. Size 8-14. The model is 5’10” so petite ladies will find it comes below your knee. It is longer in length than a lot of fashion styles around at the moment. As it is 100% silk, you can’t wear it too tight, or it will split at the seams. It will suit slight PEAR shapes and HOURGLASS. BOYISH will need to try on, as the skirt may need hips to fill it out a bit.
  2. Flower embroidered dress. £215. Karen Millen. 100% polyester. Dry clean. Size 6-16. A more demure dress for special occasions. Suiting HOURGLASS and BOYISH figures. The 3/4 sleeves are perfect for women who hate their upper arms. Middle aged women sometimes find showing arms a touch indecent but I think the length should be fine with tights.

see through karen millen T shirt see through marks and spencers blouse

  1. Sheer back T shirt . £50. Karen Millen.  Viscose elastane mix. Sizes 6-16. Machine washable.  Also in peach and white. I lovely floaty T shirt which can be worn during the day with a vest top under so it’s appropriate for work or school runs, but can be worn with just a bra at night time for a hint of naughtiness!!  The colours reflect the pastel theme in fashion this summer. Team with dark colours (navy, berry) or try other pastels (whites, pinks, citron) or even orange!
  2. Collared neck long sleeve sheer blouse. Marks and Spencers. £29.50. Ivory. 100% polyester. Machine washable. Sizes 8-24. Hurrah, a top to cover all muffins and bellies!! It has an opaque panel over all the bits you may want to hide! And what can go wrong with white? (apart from ketchup, if you have kids)

If you are worried about wearing organza, ask me a question, or you can book a consultation with me. If you would like me to feature a particular trend you have seen, give me a comment and I’ll see what I can do. My faves are the Zara jacket and the Karen Millen T shirt. What are yours?

My Facebook page often shows me wearing different trends so you can see how a Lesser Mortal gets away with it.

Can We Lesser Mortals wear denim with out looking like a yummy mummy?

Denim is all over the shops at the moment, and we must all have had those moments in our youth when we wore denim all the time. Can you even remember running around after your kids all day, thinking you’ll never stop wearing jeans and finally consigning them to weekends only? Are you worried that denim will make you regress back to thinking only about cleaning and the shopping list? Well, the modern twist on denim has a really smart and urban feel, so we should definitely buy a piece this summer, but unless you want to look like a yummy mummy, avoid a denim jacket and a faded denim skirt cut just above your knee (what do you mean, you still have one from 10 years ago??)

next denim biker jkt karen millen denim skirt next denim dress

  1. Midwash denim biker jacket. Next.  £45. Size 6 – 22. 100% cotton. One reviewer says the sleeves are long and if you are well endowed, it is tight when done up. However, this is a really modern twist on a denim jacket, and copies the winter trend for leather biker jackets. It will look fab with floral or pastel coloured jeans this summer.
  2. Dark denim pencil skirt. Karen Millen. £99. Cotton elastane mix. Sizes 6-16. What I love about this skirt, is, it is an on trend pencil shape, cut longer in the length, and when styled like this -with ankle boots – is as far away from yummy mummy as possible. Definitely style with heels – sandals or boots – to give it a modern feel. If it’s too pricey – Next do one too, but it is paler in wash.
  3. Denim shirt dress. Next. £30. 100% cotton. Comes in regular, tall and petite, as well as sizes 6-22. It has loads of 5 star reviews, but won’t be easily recognisable as Next, when you wear it. It’s very forgiving in style if you have any lumps and bumps to hide. The tie belt, will adapt to high or low waists, and the button up style flatters large chests.

  1.  Denim Liz pleated shirt. G Star Raw. £130. sizes XS- XL. Polyester cotton, chambray fabric. Even with these pleats, this is washable! I think this is a really unusual shirt, and will work really well with the summer pencil style skirts and skinny jeans, and even white tuxedo style trousers.
  2. Tie front shirt. Levis. £65. 100 % cotton. Only size XS- L. Machine washable. This shirt is longer length for those self conscious about their bellies, and the pussy bow gives it a really smart grown-up look. It’ll look great with jeans, skirts and leather pencil skirts. It may even be smart enough for office wear.

next denim trousers denim pump zara

  1. Tencel tapered trousers. Next. £32. Sizes 6-22 and length Reg to Long and X-long. 100% man made Tencel.  At last, some soft loose fitting trousers for summer. Wear with a shell or vest top and definitely heels, or they’ll look like jog pants. Layer with a bomber jacket or blazer to keep the look smart.
  2. Denim ballerina flats. Zara. £29.99. Sizes 3-8. Upper is 100% cotton. With a see-through perspex heel, how wearable are these little flats? Fabulous to wear with everything, and perfect for holidays when your feet swell with the heat!!

I think you’ll agree there are many new fresh ideas for denim this summer, without being too casual. If you have any comments or questions, feel free to ask.

The chic fashionista: Katie Holmes wears a denim skirt

Can We Lesser Mortals wear this summers neon trend, without looking like a belisha beacon? It’s a hard look to master, and I would leave embracing it whole-heartedly, to the young and lithe. Firstly, it always looks fab on a lovely mediterranean tan (have I lost your attention already?). Secondly, how much attention do you wish to draw to yourself? and thirdly, do you want people asking you when the roadworks will be completed?? That being said, I am certainly going to embrace neon this summer, by using it as an accent colour.  If you are pale-skinned, it will work well to add strength to the pastel colours which are around this summer. And it just makes ordinary garments a little bit quirkier e.g. brogues with a neon shoe lace. The shops haven’t got lots in yet, but I would expect more as the weather gets more summery.

top shop neon tunic ted baker neon shift karen millen neon cardi

  1. Fluro flower tunic. Topshop. £38. 100%polyester. Machine washable. Sizes 4-16. This obviously hides a multitude of sins….The model is 5’10 so petites can expect it to be a little longer, and very tall ladies may find it only just covers your waist band. May be a good cover up on the beach too.
  2. Ramonda floral print tunic. Ted Baker. £149. 100% polyester and machine washable. Sizes 6-14 (16 out of stock) This dress has a beautiful contrast zip and pleated skirt bit at the back. If you are very straight up and down, it can be a bit “hippy” so may not be a good fit. The problem with this, will be in colder weather, as black opaques are not going to look great next to this pale colour. I would try wearing it over some jeggings or skinnies as a tunic, or failing that, slap loads of fake tan moisturiser (easier than fake tan at avoiding streaks but takes a few days to build up) and try a very fine 7 denier tight, a shade darker than your natural skin tone. The only opaque I think would work, would be a footless tight but be careful which colour- try www.mytights.com Pamela Mann have 50 denier cerise and damson coloured ones, which should look nice with this. Or Topshop have a pale pink rose lace tight, which would give this dress a vintage look with Mary Jane shoes. This look is a bit too “little girl” if you have kissed your 40’s good-bye.
  3. Knit cardigan with neon trim. Karen Millen. £99. Polyester viscose and hand washable. Sizes 6/8-16. This cheeky little cardigan has a sheer back to it, so is rather see-through! Fear not – nothing a little vest top won’t solve! Consequently, it gives you 2 looks for the price of one. Sheer for evening, or as a normal cardigan now, for day wear. (wear a shirt or T-shirt under for daywear so it looks less transparent) Not sure I’ll be doing the patch jean look (especially if my daughter is), but I think this will look great over a lace pencil skirt.

We all like a nice floral to put us in the Spring spirit, and this Spring/summer, the patterns are set to be loud and bold . But, can a Lesser Mortal wear them without looking like a right Charlie round your local Tesco? As always, the high street does some great variations, and if you are a shrinking violet (yes – a pun intended!) I suggest a more tonal pattern, perhaps in a pastel shade. But remember, it’s early days yet, and we always feel a bit brighter and bolder when the sun comes out.

It also has forgiving ruching over the belly area, so it isn’t body-con. Suits a curvier figure, as without hips, it is too flappy round the thighs. Also has forgiving 3/4 length sleeves.
  2. Lisette dress. Phase Eight £99. Sizes 6-20. Made of slinky jersey, this will flatter a larger bust because it has a V-neck, but it also gathers under the bust line, so it shows a slimmer midriff. With gathers and ruching around the waist, it also disguises a jelly-belly!! Machine washable. Less likely to crease for holidays and if you like matching accessories, this has shrugs, and bags to match.
  3. Cocoa – roses on canvas print dress. Ted Baker. £169. Size 6-14. 100% polyester and hand washable. Again, this prefers a curvy figure, as it has wider hip measurements. The fabric is not so stretchy, so the bust may be a little tight for some ladies.

These dresses are good investments, as the bold colours will be kind to pale English skin tones. And really…as a Lesser Mortal, did you suddenly think you were going to develop a mediterranean glow over the summer? If on a budget, you can always wait for the sales…..

wallis floral top zara floral jeans

  1. Navy blue floral top. Wallis. £33, now reduced to £31.35. Sizes 8-20. Running low on some sizes. Polyester and machine washable. A fab little top which hides a multitude of sins. Dress up or down. If you are buying a cheaper top, go for bold colours, as I always think paler polyester tops can look cheap.
  2. 5 pocket printed trousers in sky blue. Zara. £29.99. Cotton Elastane. Size 6-16. Machine washable. A comfy stretchy trouser in a more subtle floral. As the material on these are quite thin, you may want a longer length top or shirt with this. (unless you have rock hard abs, in which case you aren’t very mortal!!)

ted baker floral jacket river island floral jacket

  1. SAAMSA Electric daydream biker jacket. £179. Ted Baker. Polyester/elastane mix. Dry clean. Sizes 6-14. Don’t be put off by a bold jacket. For a start, you alway get compliments, as everyone else just has a dull plain one. But they are also much more stylish than a cardi!! Obviously, wear plainer T-shirts and jeans/trousers with it.
  2. Light pink daisy jacquard cropped jacket. £50. River Island. Size 6-18. Polyester and  metallic fibre. Dry Clean only. This is much more subtle if you are more wall flower than red hot poker! Again, ditch the cardi and look sharper with a throw-on jacket. This will also complement the pastel skirts coming through for the summer.

Monochrome has been a fashion trend for the the last 6-8months and is still forecast to continue this Spring Summer. That’s great news for We Lesser Mortals of normal age, shape and income!! It’s a really wearable trend and readily accessible with the only downside being, that as the weather becomes brighter and sunnier (I know…hard to believe at the moment – but I’m sure you’ll be able to buy waders soon in monochrome) it can wash us out a bit, if we aren’t the sort who tans. If that’s the case, accessorising is the key to lifting the look with pops of colour in the form of belts, shoes and handbags, and if you’re brave, a bold lipstick. Here are some  ideas in the shops at the moment.

karen millen silhouette dress Somerset by Temperley

  1. Stretch texture print dress. £160. Karen Millen. Sizes 6-16. This picture doesn’t do the dress justice, as it uses the illusion of black and white side panels to create more of an hour glass figure. It is quite body con (i.e. very fitted) but not too clingy as the fabric is quite supportive. Awful if you are flt chested as it just squashes you down. Great if you aren’t too pear shaped or would like to create/accentuate curves. And very striking to look at. Polyamide, elastane and acetate mix.
  2. Monochrome dress, Somerset by Alice Temperley. £150. John Lewis. Sizes 6-18. 100% silk. Dry cleanable. A very flattering shape for pear shaped ladies or hour glass figures, with a nice flowing skirt and nipped in waist. The black panel at the top broadens shoulders.

mint velvet monochrome top topshop leggings 2014 monochrome

  1. Billie print top. £59. Mint Velvet at John Lewis. Sizes 6-18. Silk and viscose mix. I think the model is 5’10, so this will be a lot longer on shorter ladies, thus offering some coverage of the derriere region!!A lovely striking T shirt, which you can chuck on, but immediately look stylish. Zip opening at the back, and hand washable,
  2. Textured floral flock tregging. £30. Topshop. polyester elastane mix. machine washable. Obviously, I wouldn’t team this with a crop top, unless you are anything other than perfectly formed, so I would wear a longer top (maybe a silk shirt and high sandals for a night time look, or brogues and a viscose T shirt for a smart day time look). But these treggings are surprisingly unrevealing (i.e. fabric has a bit of weight behind it, not thin jersey) and comfortable for curling up on the sofa. I think they would be quite nice holiday wear with a crisp linen shirt.

reiss jumpsuit 2014 monochrome karen millen monochrome coat

  1. Snakeskin jumpsuit. £195.Reiss. sizes 4-14. 100% polyester. Handwashable. Just pushing your boundaries a bit here. Jumpsuits are very stylish, and apart from the – I need to take it all off to go to the loo issues- are easy and comfortable to wear. I am assuming you won’t be night clubbing in it, and therefore running the risk of trailing it on an undesirable toilet floor. Not many ladies embrace a jumpsuit, so when I wear mine, I feel different and eye-catching (for the right reasons). It’s definitely  a good one if you want to be different at a wedding. You can belt them in, or let it all hang out underneath! Watch out if you are petite or very tall. I don’t think I need to explain why??
  2. Graphic tweed pod coat. Karen Millen. £250. Sizes 6-16. Yes I know I seem to mention Karen Millen quite a lot at the moment, and no I don’t have shares….but they are doing some really stylish eye-catching pieces at the moment. This coat is quite big and shapeless, but that is intended. It may drown a petite lady and hide a curvy lady, but will be brilliant on a more apple shape, or a super tall slender frame.

So apologies if these are all a bit pricey, but there are tons of monochrome out there, with Next and Top Shop having a varied range.
