Archives for the month of: December, 2013

Well Lesser Mortals, it’s that time of year when people throw style to the wind and don Santa hats and reindeer antlers, and sing “rocking around the Christmas tree”

Here are some stylish Christmas “must haves”

rudolph xmas jumpers

Did you nearly believe me?

…..seriously??’re 30..40..50..60?? Keep all that in the house, with the family and for children’s parties. (except the Santa hat if you have cold ears) Christmas jumpers really ARE for the younger element of society. (Except I have to say SamCam has managed to look quite good in hers.)

Bearing that in mind, even Lesser Mortals, may need a Christmas jumper, and here are some festive suggestions that will give you more wear than just on Christmas Day.

tasteful xmas jumpers

  1. Fairisle pattern sweater. Next. £30. composition cotton, nylon, wool. Available in regular, petit and tall. Jumper sits on hips so should hide muffin tops!! You can still wear this outside the Christmas period, as it is only a nordic influence. Try with faded denim in summer, for a retro look.
  2. Torsby Raglan jumper. Superdry. £49.99. Polyester, acrylic, wool. sizes 6-16. Sits on hips, but not really long if you have a bit of a tummy. You can wear this all year round, and will give a 70’s look to an A-line skirt.
  3. Lewes sequin jumper. £75 (reduced from £95).Reiss. polyester cotton mix. Long length jumper, versatile for wearing with leggings or jeans. You will get plenty of wear with this during the year. You could even try a silk shirt underneath.

I shall be signing off now till the New Year, to give you some lovely ideas for Spring Summer, but if one of your resolutions for the New Year is to improve your clothing, look now at booking

Tis the season to be jolly and as such, We Lesser Mortals like to get down on the dance floor, or to prop the bar up  all night, like the best of them. But can we do this in some lovely party shoes, without risking a month in traction afterwards? Let’s face it,  we’re not all Victoria Beckham, and the need to have some suitable footwear to walk/dance/have use for on another occasion, is foremost in our minds. We Lesser Mortals have also been there and done silly height shoes when we were younger….something about older and wiser???

Well, here are my suggestions for some  party shoes, which I think will have longevity and can be used for other occasions too.

nextr silver T bar red clarks psrty shoe clarks black suede party

  1. Silver T -bar pointed court shoe. Next £30. This is a  fabulous little shoe for dancing the night away. You can either think of it as “Strictly” footwear, but more importantly, this retro style is going to work in the summer too and with the new crop trouser trend. It is 100% man made, so appeals to vegans.
  2. Azizi Iris red suede shoe. Clarks £69.99. (Shhhhh!! Don’t tell anyone I’ve said Clarks.) Available in half sizes, and with cushioned soles – imagine how comfy they’ll be on your feet….. The red colour will work brilliantly with your LBD. They will also translate well in summer if at a wedding, or generally against tanned legs.
  3. Drum loop black suede court shoe. Clarks £49.99. These are really versatile and as well as being in half sizes and cushioned soles, they come in normal and wide fittings. Perfect with your LBD but will go with just about ANYTHING after Christmas.

  1. Martha diamante embellished ballerina pump. Dune £75. Comes in black, beige and a royal blue, all of which seem to have been reduced. Available on Amazon, House of Fraser and Debenhams. I don’t need to say how versatile these little pumps will be. You can even stick them in a drawstring bag, and change half way through the evening if your feet are sore in your heels.
  2. Arabella black suede court shoe. Carvela. Reduced to £39 from £85. Available in department stores too. Very versatile, with the gold adding a touch on bling, but still very subtle.

Remember – there’s murder on the dance floor – but let hope it’s not your feet killing you…

lace valentino

Lace has been around in the shops for a year or so, and still shows no sign of going away.  It is a really flattering fabric which suits most body shapes, and I have to say, other than hating cheap lace on top of cheap stretchy jersey fabric, even modestly priced lace clothes are stylish – I have a Gok Wan one from Sainsbury’s that never fails to get compliments. Here I present some lovely ‘going out’ dresses, as it’s that time of year, and have suggested some colours other than black to chose from. ( we may be Lesser Mortals, but that doesn’t mean we have to blend into the background??? – better to burn out …..)

  1. Layla Red Lace Sleeved Embellished dress. Monsoon. £119. Nylon viscose. Dry clean only. Perfect for hour glass figures and nice cleavages! This is really flattering and classy. Longer length in keeping with the retro fashions of 40’s and 50’s.  Surely your conversation will get more attention than showing your knickers? Also available in black.
  2. Mallary Lace Dress. Coast £170. Viscose polyester, dry clean only. It’s nice to have a purple dress on offer, and would suit ladies with larger hips, or lack of tummy tone.  The dress floats outwards on its  own, so who knows what’s underneath??
  3. Lace strapless dress. Next £125 (need I say that the cheaper lace Next dresses were sold out?? There is a very similar one to the Coast one for £60, but you’ll have to search to find it!!) 100% polyester, but available in tall and petite lengths. Again, will suit hippy ladies, or a bit of loose tummy. May flatter big bust, but may hang of your chest..

french connection lace dressted baker lace dress8924546465822

  1. Daisy Chain Lace Shift dress. French Connection £170. 100 % polyester. These styles are great on waif like figures and more apple shapes. If you’ve got curves, why hide them?
  2. Elke Lace detail dress Ted Baker £149 Not great on larger busted women. Better on sticks and ladies with hips and tummies. Starting to run out of sizes. Lovely metallic lace detail on top. Darker skirt area to allow hips to fade into the background….
  3. Enid machine Lace sequin dress. Monsoon £69 Also available in red… and all in stock! polyester acrylic nylon. machine washable. Slightly more forgiving dress on lumps and bumps, but has some waist shaping

A lot of the dresses featured here, are pricier, but plenty of cheaper versions around, just starting to run out of sizes. Avoid cheap stretchy body con lace, and you’re good to go!
