dries van noten fur aw2013

We’ve already talked about how texture has been very dominant this Autumn Winter, with trends in leather and tweed. Other textures showing in the shops are fur and feathers. Obviously it isn’t very ethical to wear real fur, unless you are happy to wear it when it’s a by-product of the food industry. Whatever your thoughts are on the subject, the cost of real fur means fake fur has to be a valid alternative. Still, when you look around the High Street, there are some sorry states of affairs out there. Why on earth would you want to wear cheap acrylic fur, where you can practically hear the static crackling as you hold the garment out to look at it? Many lovely items have been spoilt by this lack of attention to detail, and it can really drag the overall appearance of the garment down. My top tips for buying fake fur…

  1. Is it nice and soft and fluffy?
  2. Look for fur where you are getting a variety of lengths to the fibres, so it looks like there is a soft downy layer underneath the longer guard hairs.
  3. The longer fake fur hairs may be striped or not all the same colour, and that makes it look more natural.
  4. Leopard skin can never look real, so you have more of a tendency  to look like Pat Butcher……Step away from!!!

There are actually some lovely items available, but I have to say that one of my pet hates are parka jackets, found in all the high street shops, with fur trims that look like drowned cats.

Instead, here are some my ideas for full fur coats:

  1. Cream longer length fur coat. Dorothy Perkins. Reduced from £69 to £62 (30% off a lot of items) It feels really nice and soft even though it is a mixture of acrylic and polyester. Dry Clean only. They are running out of sizes though. This style will hide wider hips, and the collar will broaden shoulders.
  2. Alfine fur coat. Coast. £125. A fabulous little short jacket, nice and soft, which will look great with party dresses, leather skirts and flared or skinny jeans. Great if you have long skinny legs, but it may make bust look big if you are well endowed.

If you just fancy a hint of fur, then the two above could be for you.

  1. Elena swing coat. Monsoon. £99. An empire line swing coat which will fit apple shaped bodies, as well as virtually every other body shape (petite, skinny etc). Dry clean only with detachable fake fur collar. They are running out of the pink on-line, so check in store. But it does come in black too.
  2. Glamorous neutral parka. Karen Millen. £195. The body of the jacket is polyester modacrylic. It has a quilted lining and detachable collar and it is washable.

If you still want to steer away from fake fur, then you can always accessorise, but be careful that these don’t look even cheaper. Some of the fur fur hats around look terrible!

  1. Cosy fake fur scarf. Marks and Spencers. £25 Polester and acrylic and modacrylic. 2 colours are available,  but one may look more artificial than the other, so do check before you buy!

prada. metallic dress

Shiny metallics have graced the Autumn Winter catwalk and could really add some pizazz to outfits for We Lesser Mortals during the festive period…..or could it all go horribly wrong?

There is definitely room for error, and no matter how much we love Twiggy, I think you’ll agree – it hasn’t worked. And if you are plus size…well need I say more!! (MarksandSpencers Twiggy range)

twiggy

There have been the appearance of brogues and footwear in metallic silvers and bronzes, and although these will look great with skinnies, can you really imagine your teenagers face when you walk downstairs in them? Or for that matter, the other mums in the playground? (boots –Zara)

zara metallic shoes

There are much more wearable options which will suit Lesser Mortals from your thirties upwards. Flattering A-line dresses, metallic trousers which can be worn with either fitted tops, or more flowing blouses, to disguise wobbly bits!! Chanel style jackets which will glam up a Little Black Dresses at Christmas, or smarten up jeans and a jumper. And even chunky pieces of knitwear to keep you warm, without looking too fuddy duddy. If it’s all too much, metallic court shoes with a pair of skinnies, or a party dress, won’t look too young.  A little evening bag to update that sad old evening bag, you’ve had for years could give a nod in the direction of this trend!!

  2. Metallic Jumper Marks and Spencers Autograph Range £45. This is washable at 30 deg, and can be tumble dried!! Hip length for trousers and with the look “du jour” – chunky knit over leather skirt.

overknee boots 3 times

Well….need I say more? Spot the difference between Teresa May and the catwalk models??

So, can We Lesser Mortals wear over the knee boots? If you are very young, very skinny, and very classy, then yes. If you are a Lesser Mortal and find that age has caught up with you, and there is no way those size 8 jeans you kept, in case you slim down, are ever going to fit you….then NO. And why would you need to? There are so many boots out in the shops that will look great what ever your shape and size. I love shoe boots/ankle boots, which look fabulous with skirts and dresses, as well as jeans.

Below I have shown some which are pretty versatile, and some which have lower heels and different textures to add interest if worn with an LBD at Christmas. I have left casual day boots alone, as we are nearing the festive period. I don’t think you can get away with flat boots with a party dress. Ankle boots are a great way to avoid the old problem of “do these fit my calves?” and also the problem if you are petite and find many boots too long. Nothing worse than badly fitting boots.

posh boots

  1. Crosby knee high boots, with slight platform sole. £185 Duo. Free P & P. These boots have croc effect on the back panel and a silver clip round the calf. They come in a range of calf sizes, so should fit everyone. They also have a video clip on the web site to show what they look like on!!!
  2. Black snake effect to the knee boot. £52 Next. These are not leather, but this solves a problem many vegans have!! The fabric interest makes them a nice classy boot to wear with evening outfits.
  3. Sylie Suede platform knee boots. L K Bennett £31o. Available in navy and black. Also have a slight platform. Great for leg lengthening.
  4. Florence boot. Hobbs.£199. Already reduced from £249! Available in plain back, and 2-tone stone and black, which would be fine for a more summery look. Maybe keep your eye out for them in the sales!!
  5. Ruby Dry ankle boots £245 Russell and Bromley. Available in several colours, including red and suede. These would look great at any Christmas function, or worn during the day – not too high as they have a slight platform sole to offset heel height.
  6. Croc and suede ankle boot £225. Karen Millen. A really classy pair of ankle boots, which will look great for evening wear. Orders over £150 are free, and you can return them for free via 3 different convenient options.

d and G tweed 2013

D and G are showing some amazing classic tweed pieces, along with some of the other Fashion Houses. “Gorgeous and wearable” I hear you say…..at least Grace Kelly got away with it! But if you are approaching mid-life, have a figure more reminiscent of Olivia Colman than Victoria Beckham, and really struggle with heels, can you get away with it? Fear not Lesser Mortals, there are many items out there, more suited to our pockets, and that will fit all shapes and sizes. It is important to look at what shoes and accessories you wear with your tweed pieces, and I needn’t say that a Lesser Mortal in tweed, woolly tights and brogues doesn’t stand a chance……

3 tweeds 2013 1

  1. Tailored tweed coat. Karen Millen £275. This coat has woven matt metallic sleeves, and I think it escapes the Miss Marple look because of the sleeves, and because of its Crombie shape. It has lovely tucks at the back, which may allow room if you have wider hips. It is made of Alpaca wool, cotton and mohair. Will look great with flat shoes too.
  2. Bronze textured jacket – Next £45. In an up to date Chanel style, you can chuck this jacket on over a pair of jeans, skinnies and brogues or Chelsea boots, and definitely not look like you are stalking deer. It is a polyester wool mix.
  3. Bronze textured skirt – Next £30. this A line shape flatters curvier shapes and can be worn with a simple jumper and heels or knee length boots. You can pair with the jacket above, and go for a real Jackie O look, for £75!!

3 tweeds 2013 2

  1. Here is another Karen Millen style: Herringbone tweed jersey dress £190. I think Karen Millen have done this tweed look well, because they have given it an urban edge. Hobbs can be a bit country gent and so can Joules. The shape is great for hour glass and pear shapes. It could also work on boyish figures. Fabric is faux leather, wool cotton and elastane.
  2. Tweed waistcoat Ted Baker.£129. Here’s a quirky tweed waistcoat from Ted Baker which isn’t just for work situations. How about teaming with a leather pencil skirt, or berry waxed jeans and a silk shirt? Maybe wear a leather jacket over, rather than a tweed one, to look less country set.
  3. Checked blazer with elbow patches. Zara £69.99. These types of jacket are so versatile, that you can wear in formal and informal situations. I would sling it over some jeans at the weekend, or wear with a skirt or dress during the week. Tall women may struggle with the arm length, but Long Tall Sally do one without the elbow patches.
