aw13 mannish maison Martin margiela

Mannish shapes and pinstripes were shown as a trend for Autumn 2013, but can a Lesser Mortal who is a mother of kids, slightly weightier than in their heyday, get away with it? You’ll notice how all the magazines show these styles on gorgeous, slim models with long hair, to counteract the mannish-ness of the pieces!!! Obviously there is a reason for this! They are quite difficult to wear! The look can translate well into work wear, but it can also work casually.

pinstripe working

  1. Belted pinstripe dress Mango £59.99. Hand washable. This shape is feminine and works well for women who like to show off a waist, but who may also have no curves ( the skirt will give curves). And it also works if you have wider hips, as the A line shape to the skirt will disguise them nicely.
  2. Navy pinstripe jacket Zara £49.99. Poly viscose and dry clean. This lovely little jacket can be slung on over jeans or any coloured skirt/dress to give it a bit of a lift. It is really easy to wear.
  3. Ambrose pin stripe jacket £225 and Lynne pin stripe trousers £135. Reiss. Dry clean. Reiss have really nailed this trend making it look relaxed and not too mannish, so most women could wear this in a networking/work situation. I would definitely wear heels and a bright top underneath.

Here are 2 looks I think would definitely be hard for a Lesser Mortal to pull off:

top shop mans coatzara man strip skirt £29.99

  1. Navy wool coat Top shop Boutique £210
  2. Pinstripe skirt and top Zara. The skirt is £29.99 and is a really easy piece to wear with opaque tights, knee boots and a bright knitted jumper. As you can see from the photo, too much pinstripe in hard for a Lesser Mortal to carry off, hence the gorgeous model who looks old enough to be my daughter!!
